Title : Travelling with Kids in the Heat

Travelling with younger children in hot weather can be a challenge at any time.

Here are a few tips that you may find useful, whether you are travelling by car, plane or train.

1. Put diffuser screens on the back windows of your car. They can be invaluable in helping to keep the sun out of younger children’s eyes and faces.

2. If you are on public transport, beware the pressure from children to sit by the window. It’s well and good but depending upon direction and angles once again they may end up getting the full blast of the sun in their face.

3. Once you leave the protection of air conditioning, make sure that your kids’ heads are covered and younger children in prams and pushchairs might benefit from those umbrella sunscreens that attach as accessories.

4. Make sure they drink plenty of water and ration their access to ice-cold drinks -  if you’d like to avoid tummy troubles!

5. Select accommodation that has a great pool. For example, all of our accommodation, Port Douglas and elsewhere, will provide great opportunities for your young ones to get wet and keep themselves cool.

6. It’s a smart idea to keep an eye on the exuberance of their games and running around, particularly when they are younger. Younger children often seem to have little or no inbuilt sense of needing to control their activities while it’s hot and heat exhaustion can arise more quickly than you may imagine.

7. If you are driving a lengthy distance, plan in plenty of rest stops. Just a 10 minute break in a service station can allow them to stretch their legs and get some better air flow around them than might be possible in your car.

We have a long history of making kids feel really welcome up here  in Far North Queensland and we look forward to doing the same for you and yours!
