By some reckoning, the Aboriginal or First Nations peoples had already lived in Far North Queensland for around 40,000 years before the first European explorers arrived.
That is such a vast period of time that it is difficult for people from a predominantly European or Asian background to grasp the sense of continuity it must provide.
The original inhabitants of this area developed their own beautiful traditions in art (such as dot painting) which are fortunately continued by modern artists in the local communities to this day.
When you are on holiday here, you’ll get the chance to explore something of these communities and their traditions particularly through their art. There are a number of famous galleries in the area where you’ll be able to take in both traditional and contemporary works and if you wish, purchase some to take back with you.
All of these galleries and centres are within easy reach of your Cairns or Trinity Beach accommodation and they are in turn just a sample of the great cultural background to the traditional attractions of this area such as its amazing countryside and breath-taking beaches.
In modern Australia, there is much more awareness of the need to value the contribution and history of our first inhabitants and you won’t find anywhere better to do that than in the country surrounding Cairns.
We’ll be happy to give you some recommendations from our own intimate knowledge of the area and its galleries and centres etc. It is one of the many ways that we’d like to help you enjoy Far North Queensland and your holiday here to the maximum.
Look forward to seeing you soon!
