Title : The Moulin Rouge Comes to Cairns

We’re always keen to kill off any ideas that Cairns in Far North Queesland is something of a sleepy backwater in cultural terms and we bet the above title caught your eye!

The Moulin Rouge is a world-famous nightclub in Paris that’s visited by well over half a million people each year. One of its big attractions is its dancers and their lavish dance routines. Don’t be confused by this – these dancers are serious and the highest possible standards of athleticism and artistic endeavour are demanded.

That’s why it was great to see the said Moulin Rouge this year in Cairns conducting auditions for dancers (male and female).  Those that make the first cut will get to a second series of auditions in London and hopefully then onto Paris. Apparently, Australians are the most numerous dancers in the Moulin Rouge after the French and the British.

Now if you’re wondering what this has to do with say your Port Douglas accommodation, well, not very much directly perhaps. What it does do though is show that Cairns is now a recognised centre of excellence for the performance arts and not just in Australia.

There are simply BAGS of things to do here in the evenings in our various centres. As we’ve said before, nightlife here is not just great restaurants and a few decent pubs. There is a huge variety of activities to join in with and that includes cinema, art exhibitions, dance, specialist cinema and so on. You certainly won’t be bored once the sun goes down!

Now it’s true that we can’t promise you’ll be ‘spotted’ on the street by the Moulin Rouge or a Hollywood film mogul with the result that your life will change forever! We can though guarantee you a great and diverse nightlife.

Why not come and see for yourself?
